At 200mm it is specified where the target U-value is at its most demanding, on deep retrofit, low-energy and fabric-first projects that need to draw the most resistance possible out of a single insulation layer.
Each board measures 1200mm x 600mm and is supplied 6 boards to a pack for 4.32m² of coverage. It carries a declared thermal conductivity of 0.030 W/mK and a thermal resistance of 6.65 m²K/W*, the highest figure in the PlusTherm range, so a single 200mm board reaches a level of insulation that thinner boards can only match by being doubled up.
Cutting comes into focus at this depth. A fine-tooth saw can labour through 200mm of board, so a hot-wire cutter is the tool of choice, taking clean, square full-depth sections around reveals, openings and services in one pass. Clean cuts here keep the boards tight to one another and to the detailing, which counts for more the deeper the layer gets.
200mm EPS External Wall Insulation is installed as part of a complete EWI system: bonded with an adhesive mortar, secured with long mechanical fixings sized for the depth, then rasped level, mesh-reinforced in a basecoat and finished with render. It suits solid brickwork, timber frame and steel frame walls up to 18m, and should be installed to the system provider's instructions, the Stylite EWI datasheet and the project specification, with reveals, sills and beads set out for the deep standoff and long fixings specified to reach the substrate. As with any expanded polystyrene board its reaction to fire is Euroclass E, and its fire performance is only ever established as part of the tested system, not the board on its own.
